This section of the website will give you, as best as possible, a better understanding of the laws that negatively affected your Social Security COLAs and benefits and for other government retirees. These laws are complex and confusing at best and in some cases make no sense. We provide you some basic background information.
Here, we will provide you a simple listing of the major impacts that are negatively impacting COLAs every year.
Rather than provide the very large calculations, this section will show you the various approaches SS could calculate COLAs which will show clearly the negative impacts under the current scheme of COLAs. This area is also very complex and can be difficult to understand.
SS is a VERY large portion of the Federal budget and each year Congress recognizes there are problems that we outlined, but kick the can down the road for the next group of legislatures to deal with. Very briefly, our country spends money in contravention of the Constitution whereas the States possess those powers under the 10th Amendment not the Federal government. Pressuring Congress to correct this must be overwhelming.
